November

Published by violetteb under Barefoot Edit This

Looking for something to close out November on the last day of the month, a lazy Sunday, or at least when I get to this Sunday (as I write it, it is a week away yet for me), I hope that I have enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with the family and that I’ll be sad to see Scooby go, our adopted dog for a few days. Yes, it better be a lazy Sunday after church with a warm cup of coffee and maybe some leftover dessert.

I’m enjoying the November morning sky as I write this and found this video of a song called November from a German group called July, well Juli, actually. While it is a love song of some sort the video is cool and most certainly music to enjoy any day of the year.

I posted the lyrics and another video of it at WritelyApplied this Sunday as well.

Thanksgiving in Ten

It is Thanksgiving in ten minutes and I suppose I should be worrying about whether or not the bird will be thawed in time and if the store opens when I think it does in the morning so that I can pick up the things I still need (good thing the grocer is very near by my locale).

Well, maybe I should worry more that I don’t undercook or overcook that dang thing. I didn’t even see if it had one of those fancy pop-up breast thermometers.

Wait what about the whip cream for the pie…it’s pumpkin pie you know, we NEED the whip cream…wait don’t skimp on the butter, need real butter for those rolls. What? Creamer for the coffee? I’m sure that will complete the pumpkin pie experience.

How many calories did you say that was? I guess I have more important things to worry about…

Hold the Pumpkin, Visit the Doctor

I was fully prepared to visit you with links to recipes, loads of Today.com recipe sites…that I still recommend you visit. But I thought I would take the road less travelled and invite you to visit Dr. Atif Farid’s site Health by Dr. Atif Farid.

He visited us a few days ago and I have to say, check out his site. It is full of great material. Today I’m going to say go visit his 5 Thanksgiving Health Tips, because really, it is Thanksgiving in a few days and we really need more tips than we do an umpteenth idea on what to do with pumpkin or how to survive turkey leftovers.

Tick, tock, tick, tock…time’s a wasting.

Turkey and Cheesecake

Published by violetteb under Barefoot Edit This

I’m ready to hit the ground running this week and certainly have many things to do starting with get the turkey, oh wait have to defrost the ancient refrigerator that came with this old house before I attempt to fill it with a myriad of ingredients for our Thanksgiving Day feast.

Then I have a date with a few cookbooks; always want to try something new for the holidays. In my vegetarian days, before my second pregnancy when I turned back to eating turkey again (denying myself the first time around wasn’t successful I guess), I would have a handful of new dishes to share, none of which were tofu Turkey. Now I’m apt to keep it simple. Of course with the economy, perhaps we will keep it more frugal too. Or not, I do like to splurge a bit on the holiday fare. I’m thinking of making my own cheesecake this year though. I have a Junior’s Cheesecake cookbook and a new silicone tart and cheesecake pan from QVC’s Technique line of silicone baking ware to try out.

I’ve ordered Junior’s cheesecakes in the past (from QVC as well). The family loves them, especially my oldest daughter who especially likes their strawberry offerings. I was partial to the apple crumb that was part of a sampler we got last Thanksgiving. Yum.

Any ladies and gents have a special dish they are going to return to this holiday or are you going to surprise yourself and others with something new?

Over the river and through the woods

NOT!

Thanksgiving Day fast approacheth and I have lists to make and menus to consider and fortunately, since this is one of our immediate family holidays it will remain low key. Real immediate…me, significant other, offspring and pets…and I won’t forget borrowed dog that we will dog sit, that’s a bonus this year.

Why so low key? Well imagine travel on this holiday to the northeast United States, from Philadelphia are to upstate-NY nowhere. It really isn’t over the river and through the woods. It is more like stuck on the turnpike and slow on the thruway.

Thanksgiving travel is easily a trip on any other day plus three hours or more. I’ll sacrifice my time around Christmas and New Years for my mom’s lasagna but really folks, don’t we all know how to prepare a turkey? Okay, I can make the lasagna too, but who’s to argue with the master chef?

This is it, your last weekend before Thanksgiving. Are you prepared? Better yet are you lucky and low-key like me?
